What are Hearing Checks?
Hearing is important, as 40% of the information provided by our senses is auditory. A Hearing Check is a simple, 15-minute appointment during which you will be played several sounds to test whether you may be suffering from hearing loss.
Hearing loss becomes more prevalent as we get older. Over half the population between 60 and 70 years of age experience a hearing loss. Over 70% of people over 70 experience hearing loss and this increases to 80% in those aged over 80.
What are the signs of hearing loss?
Some signs that may indicate you are experiencing hearing loss include:
- Trouble hearing or understanding people unless they are facing you
- Often having to ask people to repeat themselves
- Others around you complain your TV or radio is too loud
- Having difficulty following conversations in noisy places
What are some contributing factors to hearing loss?
There are several factors which may increase your chances of experiencing hearing loss, including:
- Older age
- Long-term exposure to loud noise, including in your work environment
- Exposure to a short blast of very loud noise
- Genetic predisposition
- Some medications
- Some illnesses
