Flu
What is the Flu?
Flu (or influenza) is a contagious viral infection which affects thousands of Australians each year. It is spread from person to person via body fluids, including fluids produced when a person coughs or sneezes.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms are:
- fever
- cough
- sore throat
- runny nose
- headaches
- body aches
- fatigue or lethargy
Who would benefit from receiving a flu vaccination?
While the flu can affect anyone, people at highest risk of experiencing severe symptoms if they contract the flu include:
- infants
- people over 65 years old
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- people who are pregnant
- people with long-term medical conditions
- people who have weakened immune systems
- people who are obese
- people who smoke
The Australian Government recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months has the flu shot every year.
As the virus constantly changes and evolves, getting a flu shot each year means you are protected against the current circulating strain.
Can I get the Flu from the Flu Vaccine?
No. Influenza vaccinations do not contain a live virus and will not give you the flu.
Sometimes people experience side effects from the flu vaccination which are similar to the early signs of flu including fever, tiredness, and muscle aches. These side effects can last up to 1-2 days and usually subside on their own.
